The story of the world’s most valuable torpedoes...

Among the precious holdings of the Croatian Maritime Museum Split, a group of artefacts that form an integral part of The weapons and weapon systems Collection particularly stands out. It can be argued that its status within the wider collection is somewhat hiding much greater significance and value of this weapon in comparison to all other belonging to the same collection.

Preparing torpedoes for firing

Sailors on deck of the Austro-Hungarian torpedo boat SMS Aspern next to a torpedo lifted from sea after an excercise launch. For raising 1,600 kg (3,500 Ib), which was the weight of each of the two 450 mm caliber torpedoes, sailors used a boat lifting crane and ropes and pushed torpedoes to the launching tubes using small carts.

Procedure after shooting

Using the tools contained in box, torpedo boat sailors handled the TR 53/IV torpedo. The corresponding booklet contains a list of supplied parts. Each was marked with a number and had its corresponding place inside the box so that sailors manage more easily. Set was handed over to the military base Divulje near the town of Trogir in 1971.
